Zig Zag, Oregon
I live in the National Forest on a Mountain. I help keep the water running for a handful of neighbors, and spend a fair amount of time fixing things that were built better than anything sold today.
This page is hand-written. Every line of it fits in one file. It will still work in twenty years, which is more than most software can say.
Things I'm working on
Two walnut lamps
Black walnut, built by my grandfather. Rewiring them and rebuilding the tops without erasing the eighty years already on them. The base section is a nightlight with a material called Lumicor. In the 40's it was the predecessor of fiberglass. It is still made today, but matching the pattern is proving a challenge.
The well
My neighbors voted me in as the President of our water association. Turns out that, as I am one of only five full-time residents here, they just needed someone's name on the paperwork for the State. It is exactly as glamorous as it sounds.
Wildfire preparedness
Working out what can actually be defended. I did receive a thumbs up report from the local fire station. We have good defensible space but we still back up to a tree farm and the National Forest. I have a Big Number price for an "A" list fire suppression system but I am leaning toward a DIY solution. Currently in the process of researching what can be done and what a river is good for when the wind turns.
