Pristine water is one of the reasons people live up here. While Portland gets most of its drinking water from Bull Run on the other side of the mountain, this side of the mountain has over a dozen public and private water systems. I somehow got put in charge of the system I now live on.
The water at my other home comes from a snowfield 12 miles up the mountain via Henry Creek. There, we have a storage tank and minimal treatment to meet federal guidelines. The cabin water is basically two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. It is not liquid water long enough to dissolve anything into it and tastes vaguely sweet. The water here comes from a well off the Sandy River. It has a bit more iron and calcium dissolved in it and requires a bit of monitoring.
The pump house is the size of a small dog house and the entire system fits in a structure the size of a one car garage across the street from the pump. Maintenance is basically doing a quick drain of the settlement tanks every couple days and verifying all numbers are within ranges.
We do add a bit of chlorine, but Portland Water Bureau adds it at the source from 40' tanker trucks. We have a 5 gallon bucket that has lasted 6 months so far. It is not a huge job, but I take it seriously and enjoy learning something new.
